LOCATION AND HISTORIC INFORMATION

The "Municipal archaeologic Museum" is located in the San Mateo quarter, the heart of the ancient Hispanic-Moorish "medina" and one of the most historically interesting and charming places in Jerez.

This museum was created in 1873 on this basis of some scattered archaeological pieces that were gathered together by the City Council. Its formal foundation was established by a 1963 goverment regulation.

Since 1993 the museum is located in a set of buildings that together with its courtyards shape a large architectonic center. The main building, a "casa señorial" -palace_ dating from the late eighteenth century, contains the permanet collection rooms.next to it, the old "Julián CuadraSchools" are at present used as temporary exhibit room as well as auditorium for congresses and lectures.
